The RTM Select is the qualification-ready cleanroom terminal housing for operators who want a robust, well-documented system. Multiple user-friendly clamping brackets accommodate filters of varying heights – no special solutions, no modifications required. Key questions and answers on RTM

An RTM (Replaceable Terminal Module) is a terminal ceiling filter housing with room-side filter access. It is the last active filter module in an air handling system (AHU) and is used primarily in highly critical cleanrooms. Installed directly in the ceiling of controlled areas (room-side installation), its design and high-performance filters ensure that incoming air meets the most stringent purity requirements.

 

Unlike our Filter Fan Units (FFUs), which include an integrated fan unit and can operate independently of a central AHU, an RTM requires a central air supply. This makes the application context clear: RTM-type cleanroom filter housings are the preferred choice as terminal housings in the pharmaceutical industry, life sciences applications, healthcare, and food and beverage production, wherever GMP compliance, validated processes, and comprehensive traceability are non-negotiable.

 

The filters used in terminal boxes or modules conform to the classes defined in EN 1822 / ISO 29463 – the internationally recognised standard for EPA, HEPA, and ULPA filters. Depending on the application, filter classes such as H14 or U15 are used, with separation efficiency verifiable directly at the housing via integrated measurement ports.

A HEPA terminal housing – also referred to as a terminal HEPA box – is the final filter element in an air handling system, positioned directly upstream of the cleanroom. The HEPA or ULPA filters installed in the terminal module to EN 1822 / ISO 29463 (e.g. H14 and U15) ensure that the supplied air reaches the highest possible purity level and is distributed evenly throughout the controlled area. Typical applications include the pharmaceutical industry, life sciences, healthcare, and the food and beverage sector. 

RTM-type cleanroom filter housings are used wherever particle-free conditions and process reliability are mandatory: HEPA and ULPA filter housings are found, for example, in sterile pharmaceutical manufacturing, biosafety cleanrooms, operating theatres and intensive care units, in food processing and the beverage industry where hygiene standards are exacting.

 

In all cases, the critical factor is demonstrable filtration efficiency in accordance with EN 1822 / ISO 29463 and ISO1466-3.

Both are ceiling-mounted housings for HEPA and ULPA filters used in cleanrooms. The key difference lies in the air supply: an RTM (Replaceable Terminal Module) requires a central air handling system to generate airflow, whilst an FFU incorporates an integral fan and operates independently. RTMs are the preferred choice as HEPA filter outlets in the pharmaceutical industry and life sciences whereas FFUs are more commonly used as filter ceiling outlets in the semiconductor industry.

For pharmaceutical cleanrooms, HEPA terminal filter housings in filter classes H14 to U15 to EN 1822 / ISO 29463 are appropriate – those that are GMP-compliant and suitable for qualification processes in accordance with EU GMP Annex 1. Critical requirements include a fully documentable integrity test via aerosol challenge, integrated measurement ports for differential pressure, and tool-free filter replacement to minimise contamination risk. For sterile production areas (ISO Class 5–7), a fully welded, corrosion-resistant housing with demonstrable separation efficiency is essential – ideally compatible with mini-pleat HEPA filters for laminar airflow at low pressure drop.

The Nanoclass RTM range from MANN+HUMMEL meets these requirements in two variants: the RTM Select for qualification-ready standard operation, and the RTM EF for the highest quality standards and rapid maintenance operations.

The decisive factors are tool-free locking mechanisms, flexible clamping systems for filters of varying heights, and fully interchangeable diffuser plates. A HEPA or ULPA terminal filter housing that is adjustable for different filter heights significantly reduces the need for bespoke solutions. A terminal filter housing with an integrated measurement port for pressure drop also allows HEPA or ULPA filtration to be verified directly from the cleanroom without any intervention in the ceiling structure.

H14 filter housing modules are designed for HEPA filters offering separation efficiency of ≥99.995% – the combination of an H14 filter with a matched RTM is standard practice in pharmaceutical manufacturing and sterile processes, for example. U15 filter housing modules go further still. The module itself and the ULPA U15 filters it contains are suitable for ultra-clean environments such as active ingredient synthesis or highly sensitive life sciences applications.

 

Both classes are defined in EN 1822 and form the basis for reliable GMP cleanroom validation. Those who require the highest purity levels – in nanotechnology or highly sensitive aseptic processes, for instance – will find the right solution in ULPA filter housings.

The central standard is EN 1822 / ISO 29463, which defines the EPA, HEPA, and ULPA filter classes and provides the basis for performance verification. Housing integrity is governed by ISO 29463-5. Cleanroom classification itself is carried out in accordance with ISO 14644. In GMP-regulated environments, the requirements of the EU GMP Guidelines (Annex 1) also apply.

A GMP-compliant cleanroom filter housing must meet several prerequisites: documentable integrity testing via aerosol challenge, integrated measurement ports for differential pressure, reproducible filter change procedures without contamination risk, and a structural design that simplifies requalification following filter replacement. Material resistance is equally important – a corrosion-resistant HEPA housing is a prerequisite for use with aggressive cleaning agents in a GxP environment.

For ISO Class 5 cleanrooms (with a maximum of 3,520 particles ≥0.5 µm per cubic metre) HEPA terminal filter housings for validated cleanroom processes in class H14 to EN 1822 / ISO 29463 are required. In particularly critical process zones, H14 or U15 filter housings are used. The ceiling filter housing for cleanrooms must ensure complete coverage of the cleanroom ceiling and uniform laminar airflow throughout.
